The eWAVE project is proud to announce the publication of its first Open Access scientific article, marking an important milestone for the project and its growing contribution to the field of maritime electrification.

The paper, titled “A Comprehensive Literature Review of State of Safety (SoS) for Maritime Battery Management Systems (BMSs)”, was authored by researchers from DNV and published in the proceedings of the 9th European Conference of the Prognostics and Health Management Society (PHME 2026).

As the maritime sector accelerates its transition towards electrification and zero-emission operations, battery safety remains a key area of focus. The paper explores the emerging concept of State of Safety (SoS) and reviews existing approaches to assessing and monitoring safety in battery systems. By analysing the current state of research, the authors identify important knowledge gaps, discuss future research opportunities, and highlight the need for dedicated maritime approaches to battery safety assessment.

The publication contributes to the growing body of knowledge supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient deployment of battery-powered vessels. It also reflects eWAVE’s commitment to advancing innovation and sharing knowledge with the wider scientific, industrial, and maritime communities.

The eWAVE consortium congratulates Eric Aaslund, Shuai Wang, and Knut Erik Knutsen on this valuable achievement and thanks DNV for leading this important contribution.

As the first scientific publication resulting from the eWAVE project, this milestone marks the beginning of what we expect to be a growing portfolio of research outputs supporting the future of sustainable and electric shipping.
