🚀 eWAVE On “Maritime Digital Battery Passport” at the DPP4EU Conference

The DPP4EU Conference on “Digitalisation for Circularity and Digital Product Passports (DPPs)” took place in Brussels on 16–18 June 2025, uniting more than 55 EU-funded projects, European Commission and HaDEA experts, the Joint Research Center, and over 900 attendees on site and online. Organised by CIRPASS-2, DigiPass CSA, and THESEUS, the conference delivered seven technical sessions (including poster sessions), six keynote talks, and an expert panel on “The DPP in 2050”, delving into policy, data sharing, semantic modelling, SSbD principles, and sector pilots.

eWAVE was invited to contribute through a presentation by Dr Werner Rom (SYRION) on “Digital Battery Passport for Maritime Applications to support Circular Economy”, part of the session “DPPs and the Circular Economy: Barriers, Challenges and Opportunities”. The talk explored how the maritime sector, despite facing significant obstacles, can benefit from tailored digital product passports.

Key Points of the Presentation:

  • The planned EU Digital Battery Passport (DBP) can accelerate the sustainable uptake and circular use of batteries for ships, both for onboard and second life applications.
  • eWAVE aims to create a DBP specifically for maritime batteries to enable new business models, facilitate the reuse of batteries on land, and capture critical, circularity-related information such as materials, disassembly, and recyclability.
  • Building on leading initiatives like the German Battery Pass, eWAVE will address shipping-specific needs—including static and dynamic data points beyond regulatory requirements and blockchain-backed traceability for both first and second-life batteries.
  • The project ultimately seeks to produce actionable recommendations for DBP implementation across electrified maritime applications.

The DPP4EU Conference served as a catalyst for advancing DPPs in the circular economy of numerous sectors (including battery-electric shipping), connecting innovators, and propelling Europe towards sustainable digital infrastructure for products of the future.
